Branch-specific underwriting
What carriers actually look at for Navy applicants.
Sub duty and aviation specialties (NFOs, naval aviators) sometimes draw extra carrier scrutiny. SWCC and NSW Operators face the SOF underwriting screen, similar to other branches. Surface fleet sailors typically underwrite cleanly. We screen up front to avoid surprise table-rates.
Sea duty and deployments
Long deployments (6+ months) sometimes complicate the application timing — paramedical exam scheduling, signature collection, and policy delivery all require shore time. We complete most active-duty applications in the 30-60 days before a deployment or during shore rotations.
Naval aviation
Pilots, NFOs, and aircrew are in the aviation underwriting bucket. Many major carriers underwrite at Standard or Standard Plus rates without exclusions, but specifics depend on aircraft type, mission profile, and flight hours. We've placed coverage for F/A-18 pilots, helicopter aviators, and P-8 crews.
Submarine duty
Sub duty is generally underwritten cleanly — no specific exclusions at major carriers. Confined-space operations and isolation aren't life insurance flags.
SWCC and Naval Special Warfare
NSW Operators (SEALs, SWCC) face SOF underwriting questions similar to other branches. Several carriers underwrite at Standard rates with disclosure; others exclude. We narrow down to the right carrier early.
